Family Therapy in Utah: When One Person's Struggle Becomes Everyone's

When something isn’t right with one person in a family, the whole family feels it. A teenager acting out. A parent struggling with depression. A sibling dealing with addiction. A child whose ADHD is creating daily chaos at home. These aren’t isolated problems. They ripple through every conversation, every meal, every interaction in the household.

And the family’s response, however well-intentioned, can sometimes make things harder. Walking on eggshells. Overcompensating. Avoiding the hard conversations. Getting stuck in roles that no one chose but everyone plays.

Family therapy at Butterfield Counseling & Neurofeedback creates a space where every person in the family can be heard and where the patterns keeping the family stuck can finally shift. We work with families at our offices in Riverdale and Logan, and through telehealth across Utah.

What Family Therapy Looks Like Here

Family therapy isn’t about pointing fingers or figuring out who caused the problem. It’s about understanding how the family system operates and where the communication, boundaries, and emotional patterns have broken down.

Our therapists work with the family as a unit while also paying attention to what each individual is bringing to the table. Sometimes that means the whole family is in the room together. Other times it means meeting with different combinations of family members depending on what’s needed in a given session. The approach is flexible because families are complicated.

What Families Come to Us For

We work with families navigating a wide range of challenges:

  • A child’s behavioral or emotional issues. When a child is struggling with ADHD, anxiety, autism or sensory processing challenges, or emotional outbursts, family therapy can help parents and siblings understand what’s happening and respond more effectively.
  • Addiction in the family. When a family member is dealing with addiction, the entire family dynamic shifts around it. Family therapy addresses the codependency, enabling patterns, boundary issues, and communication breakdowns that develop.
  • Trauma affecting the family. A traumatic event or a family member’s PTSD can create tension, confusion, and emotional distance across the household. Family therapy helps everyone process the impact together.
  • Communication breakdowns. When family members stop talking to each other or only communicate through conflict, therapy provides structure for rebuilding honest, productive conversation.
  • Major life transitions. Divorce, blending families, relocation, job loss, a new baby, a death in the family. Any major change can disrupt the family’s equilibrium.
  • Parent-teen conflict. The adolescent years bring new tensions around independence, boundaries, communication styles, and values. Family therapy can help parents and teens find a workable middle ground.

When Family Therapy Pairs With Individual Treatment

Sometimes the most effective approach is to combine family therapy with individual counseling or neurofeedback therapy for one or more family members. For example, a child with ADHD might benefit from neurofeedback to improve focus and emotional regulation, while the family works together in therapy to build better communication and reduce conflict at home. Because we offer multiple treatment modalities under one roof, coordinating that kind of comprehensive care is something we do regularly.

Our Team

Our clinical team includes therapists trained in family systems, adolescent therapy, and a range of evidence-based modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and Internal Family Systems (IFS). You can learn more about each clinician on our about page. We serve families in Ogden, Layton, Riverdale, Logan, and throughout northern Utah.

What to Expect

We begin with a consultation to understand your family’s situation and determine if our approach is the right fit. The first few sessions are about getting to know each family member’s perspective and identifying the patterns that need attention. From there, we develop a treatment plan with clear goals and check in regularly on progress.

Sessions are 30 to 60 minutes and can be scheduled at a frequency that works for your family.

Insurance and Accessibility

We accept most major insurance plans in Utah including Aetna, BCBS, Cigna, DMBA, Select Health, Tricare, UHC, PEHP, and others. See our full insurance list for details. Family therapy is available at our Riverdale and Logan offices and via telehealth across Utah.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the whole family have to come to every session?

Not necessarily. While the full family attends some sessions, your therapist may also meet with individual family members or subgroups depending on what’s most productive. The approach is flexible and adapts to what’s needed.

We work with families that include children ages 5 and up, teenagers, and adults. The therapeutic approach is adapted to be age-appropriate for every family member in the room.

It depends on the complexity of what the family is dealing with. Some families see meaningful improvement in 6 to 10 sessions. Others benefit from longer-term work, especially when addiction, trauma, or chronic behavioral issues are involved.
