Telehealth Therapy in Utah and Idaho: Quality Mental Health Care, No Matter Where You Live

If you live in a rural part of Utah or Idaho, you already know the problem. The nearest therapist might be 45 minutes away. The one who takes your insurance might be an hour and a half. And the one who actually specializes in what you’re dealing with might not exist in your area at all.

That’s the gap we’re here to fill.

At Butterfield Counseling & Neurofeedback, we offer telehealth therapy to adults and teenagers across Utah and Idaho. Our sessions are conducted through secure, HIPAA-compliant video, and our therapists bring the same level of care and expertise to a telehealth session as they do to an in-person appointment at our Riverdale and Logan offices.

Built for Rural Communities

We didn’t add telehealth as an afterthought. Working with people in rural areas is central to who we are.

Our founder, Zack Butterfield (CMHC, BCN), grew up in and around rural communities, and making mental health accessible to people outside of metro areas has been a priority since day one. It’s one of the reasons he wrote Hunting for Happiness: The Outdoorsman’s Guide to Getting Rid of Buck Fever, Cowboying Up and Enjoying Life, a book that speaks directly to people who might not see themselves in the typical therapy conversation. The kind of people who spend more time on the mountain than in a waiting room, and who deserve good mental health care just as much as anyone in a city.

Our full clinical team offers telehealth to clients across Utah, so no matter where you are in the state, you have access to the same experienced therapists and evidence-based treatment available at our physical offices. For Idaho residents, Zack Butterfield and Ashlee Jensen are both credentialed to treat clients across the state. That means if you’re in Boise or Burley, Pocatello or Preston, Twin Falls or anywhere in between, we can work with you.

What We Treat Through Telehealth

Our telehealth services focus on talk therapy for adults and teenagers. We work with clients dealing with:

  • Anxiety: Generalized worry, panic, social anxiety, and the constant what-ifs that make it hard to function normally.
  • Depression: Persistent low mood, loss of motivation, fatigue, emotional numbness, and difficulty finding pleasure in things that used to matter.
  • Trauma and PTSD: The lasting effects of painful experiences, whether a single event or years of accumulated stress and harm.
  • Addiction: Substance use, behavioral addictions, and the patterns that keep pulling you back even when you want to stop.
  • Relationship problems: Communication breakdowns, trust issues, conflict patterns, or difficulty maintaining healthy connections.
  • Coping skills: Learning practical strategies for managing stress, emotional reactivity, anger, overwhelm, and life transitions.

If you’re looking for help with something not listed here, reach out anyway. We treat a wide range of concerns and can let you know during your free 15-minute consultation whether our team is the right fit.

Our Therapy Approaches

We don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all method. Different people respond to different approaches, and our therapists are trained in a range of evidence-based modalities so we can match the treatment to the person, not the other way around.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). One of the most widely researched and effective forms of therapy. CBT focuses on identifying and changing the thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to how you feel. It’s practical, structured, and especially effective for anxiety and depression.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Originally developed for people with intense emotions, DBT teaches skills for distress tolerance, emotional regulation, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness. Useful for anyone who feels overwhelmed by their emotions or struggles with impulsive reactions.

Internal Family Systems (IFS). IFS works with the idea that we all have different “parts” of ourselves that can carry burdens from past experiences. The goal is to understand and heal those parts rather than fight against them. Especially powerful for trauma and deep-seated emotional patterns.

Lifespan Integration. A gentle, body-based therapy that helps the nervous system process unresolved memories and experiences. Particularly effective for trauma and attachment-related issues without requiring clients to talk in detail about what happened.

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). Rooted in attachment science, EFT helps individuals and couples understand the emotional patterns driving their behavior and relationships. It’s one of the most effective approaches for relationship problems and emotional disconnection.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). ACT helps you build a meaningful life while learning to handle the difficult thoughts and feelings that come with being human. Instead of trying to eliminate pain, ACT teaches you to stop letting it run the show.

How Telehealth Works at Butterfield C&N

We’ve kept the process simple. Here’s what to expect:

Schedule a free consultation. Call us or use our online form to book a free 15-minute phone consultation. We’ll talk about what you’re dealing with, answer your questions, and determine if telehealth with our team is the right fit.

Get set up. Once you’re scheduled for your first session, we’ll send you a secure link. All you need is a private space, a reliable internet connection, and a device with a camera and microphone. A laptop or tablet works best, but a phone is fine too.

Attend your session. Sessions are 30 to 60 minutes, conducted through a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. Your therapist will be on screen with you the entire time, and the experience is closer to an in-person conversation than most people expect.

Continue on your schedule. Most clients meet weekly or biweekly, depending on their needs. Because there’s no commute, telehealth sessions are easier to fit into a busy schedule, especially for people balancing work, kids, ranch life, or long distances.

Secure and Private

Privacy matters, especially in small communities where everyone knows everyone. Our telehealth sessions are conducted through a HIPAA-compliant video platform, which means your sessions are encrypted and your information is protected to the same standard as any in-person medical appointment.

No one will know you’re in therapy unless you choose to tell them. There’s no waiting room to be seen in, no car parked outside a clinic, and no receptionist who went to high school with your cousin. For a lot of our rural clients, that privacy is one of the biggest reasons they chose telehealth in the first place.

Who You’ll Be Working With

For Utah residents, telehealth sessions are available with any member of our clinical team. You’ll be matched with a therapist based on your specific needs, schedule, and treatment goals. For Idaho residents, sessions are available with Zack Butterfield (CMHC, BCN) and Ashlee Jensen, both of whom are licensed to practice in Idaho and bring direct experience working with rural populations. You can learn more about our full team on our about page.

Zack’s background in rural mental health isn’t just a professional interest. It’s personal. He understands the culture, the values, the hesitations, and the real barriers that keep people in rural areas from getting help. That understanding shapes how he works with every client.

Insurance and Cost

We accept most major insurance plans in Utah including Aetna, BCBS, Cigna, DMBA, Select Health, Tricare, UHC, PEHP, and others. Idaho insurance coverage may vary, so we recommend contacting us to verify your plan before your first session. See our full list of accepted insurances for details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is telehealth therapy as effective as in-person therapy?

For talk therapy, yes. Research consistently shows that telehealth therapy produces outcomes comparable to in-person sessions for conditions like anxiety, depression, trauma, and addiction. The therapeutic relationship and the quality of the clinician matter far more than whether you’re in the same room.

Can you prescribe medication through telehealth?

No. We are a counseling practice, not a prescribing practice. Our telehealth services are focused on talk therapy. If medication is something you want to explore, we can help coordinate with a prescribing provider in your area.

What do I need for a telehealth session?

A private space where you won’t be interrupted, a stable internet connection, and a device with a camera and microphone. A laptop or tablet gives the best experience, but a smartphone works too. We’ll send you a secure link before your session.

Is telehealth private?

Yes. All sessions are conducted through a HIPAA-compliant platform, which means your video sessions are encrypted and your health information is protected. No one can access your session recording or notes without your consent.

Do you treat teenagers through telehealth?

Yes. We work with both adults and teenagers via telehealth. For minors, a parent or guardian will need to provide consent before treatment begins. Depending on the situation, we may involve parents in some sessions or work primarily with the teen individually.

I’m in Idaho. Can you really treat me?

Yes. Zack Butterfield and Ashlee Jensen are both licensed to practice in Idaho. Whether you’re in a city or a town most people have never heard of, we can see you via telehealth as long as you’re physically located in Idaho or Utah during the session.

Do you accept Idaho insurance?

Coverage varies by plan. Contact us and we’ll help verify your benefits before your first appointment so there are no surprises.
