Every couple argues. That part is normal. What isn’t normal is when the same argument keeps circling back with nothing resolved. When one person shuts down and the other gets louder. When you’re sleeping in the same bed but living in completely different emotional worlds. When the resentment has built up so thick that even a simple conversation about dinner plans turns into a fight about something that happened three years ago.
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone, and it doesn’t mean your relationship is over. It usually means you’re stuck in a pattern that neither of you knows how to break on your own.
At Butterfield Counseling & Neurofeedback, we help couples find their way back to each other. Our therapists use Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and Gottman-informed methods to help partners understand the cycles keeping them stuck and build new ways of connecting. We see couples at our offices in Riverdale and Logan, and through
Couples counseling is not about picking sides or deciding who’s right. It’s about understanding the emotional patterns underneath the conflict. Most couples are caught in a cycle where one partner’s way of coping triggers the other partner’s worst fears, and vice versa. The pursuer-withdrawer dynamic is one of the most common examples: one person pushes for connection by getting louder or more critical, while the other pulls away to protect themselves. Both are trying to manage the same fear of losing the relationship, but their strategies make it worse.
Our therapists help you see that cycle clearly, understand what’s driving it, and learn to respond to each other differently. This isn’t about memorizing communication scripts. It’s about shifting the emotional foundation of the relationship so that real connection becomes possible again.
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). EFT is one of the most researched and effective approaches to couples therapy. Developed by Dr. Sue Johnson, EFT is grounded in attachment science and focuses on the emotional bonds between partners. Research shows that 70-75% of couples who complete EFT move from distress to recovery. It works by helping partners identify the negative interaction patterns they’re stuck in, access the deeper emotions driving those patterns, and create new, more secure ways of responding to each other.
Gottman-Informed Therapy. Based on over 40 years of research by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, this approach gives couples practical tools for managing conflict, building friendship, and strengthening the relationship’s foundation. The Gottman method identifies specific behaviors that predict relationship failure and teaches couples how to replace them with healthier patterns.
We work with couples dealing with a wide range of relationship challenges:
Sometimes the issues showing up in a relationship are connected to something one or both partners are carrying individually. Trauma, ADHD, anxiety, and depression can all significantly impact how a person shows up in a relationship. Because we offer both couples therapy and individual counseling under the same roof, we can coordinate care when both are needed. One therapist works with the couple while another works with the individual, keeping everyone moving in the same direction.
Every couple starts with a phone consultation. This gives us a chance to hear a brief overview of what’s going on and helps you decide if our approach feels right. From there, the first few sessions focus on understanding each partner’s perspective and identifying the patterns at play. Then we move into the work of shifting those patterns, building new skills, and strengthening the emotional bond between you.
Sessions are 30 to 60 minutes and can be scheduled weekly or biweekly depending on your situation and availability.

Every couple is different. Some see meaningful shifts in 8 to 12 sessions. Others with more deeply rooted patterns may work together for several months. We set goals together early on and check in regularly on progress.
That’s more common than you’d think. Sometimes starting with individual therapy can help the reluctant partner feel more comfortable. We can also discuss strategies for approaching the conversation with your partner in a way that feels less threatening.
No. We work with married couples, engaged couples, dating couples, and cohabiting partners. The relationship structure doesn’t matter. What matters is that two people want to improve their connection.
Yes. Recovering from infidelity is one of the most common reasons couples seek therapy. EFT is particularly effective for rebuilding trust and processing the intense emotions that come with betrayal. It’s a long process, but it is possible.
